This page is designed to look like a card index and appears to be made of textured paper. The main part of the page is lemon-yellow, other parts of it are pale blue. It has tags across the top and cut out shapes down the left hand side. The links appear to be written on these. The Bridging the Gap logo is at the top. This shows through a cut out section of the page.

About Us

"Bridging the Gap" is a year-long study, based in the Centre for Higher Education Practice at the Open University, and funded by the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) Innovations Fund.

Since the launch of the fund in 1998, over fifty-five projects have received funding. Key areas of interest for these projects include Key Skills, Recording Achievement, Innovation and Creativity in the Curriculum, Graduate Business start-ups and Work experience. Teams working in institutions around the country have investigated ways to improve practice in these areas, but their findings may not bring about the necessary change unless brought to the attention of colleagues.

"Dissemination of best practice is the key to maximising the effectiveness of projects funded by bodies such as the DfEE. The launch of the Bridging the Gap project signals a desire on the part of funding bodies to ensure that outcomes from projects are not lost when funding ends and teams disband," explains Godfrey Pell, Project Manager.

"If the valuable findings from these projects are not to be ignored, we need to ensure that the dissemination strategies used are effective. I am currently revisiting projects to see how they have fared in getting their ideas across - have they been successful in implementing change both in their institutions and in higher education in general? Bridging the gap between theory and practice if you like!"

Further information about this project can be obtained from Godfrey pell. Email:r.g.pell@open.ac.uk
