This page is designed to look like a card index and appears to be made of textured paper. The main part of the page is lemon-yellow, other parts of it are pale blue. It has tags across the top and cut out shapes down the left hand side. The links appear to be written on these. The Bridging the Gap logo is at the top. This shows through a cut out section of the page.

JEWELS Project: Learning through Independent Work Experience (PROSPER)
The project's aims were two-fold:
The different profiles of the two partner higher education institutions posed challenges to the project team, as did their location: each institution operates on a number of sites, which are located in rural areas where the business community is mostly composed of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
In addressing the first project aim, the team drew on existing good practice in work based learning to inform the initial model for accrediting work experience through a non-credit bearing Work Experience Award (WEA). This was piloted with the universities' undergraduates involved in summer vacation work, and other undergraduates involved in the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP). A revised model was implemented during the project's second year and formed the basis of an Independent Work Experience Module.
Given the capacity of existing degree programmes to accommodate an "additional" 10- or 15-credit module, development and validation of the module in each university was not a straightforward process. Moreover, although effort was put into developing a computer-based, self-assessment tool to allow students to record attainment and key skills development, the project team concluded that the assessment process was better supported by more flexible paper-based materials.
The implementation of a comprehensive marketing campaign - directed both at students and employers - was preceded by research. It revealed that employers encountered difficulties in contacting universities to gain access to students for work-based projects, placement opportunities, etc. Market research ascertained the most acceptable format for marketing literature targeted at SMEs in the region. Students were found to be the most effective form of marketing and recruitment for the Work Experience Award.
PROSPER (formerly Devon and Cornwall Training and Enterprise Council) provided significant support for the project. Its contribution and that of Business Link proved to be fundamental in making business aware of students and in establishing sustainable referral systems.
